Queen Angelfish

Holacanthus ciliaris

The Queen Angelfish is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular marine fish found in the Caribbean. Renowned for its vivid coloration and regal appearance, this iconic species displays brilliant shades of electric blue, yellow, turquoise, and green, highlighted by the distinctive blue-ringed “crown” on its forehead that gives the fish its royal name. Reaching up to 18 inches (45 cm) in length, the Queen Angelfish requires a spacious aquarium with abundant swimming room and mature rockwork to thrive.

Highly active and intelligent, the Queen Angelfish quickly becomes the centerpiece of any marine display. Its bold personality and graceful movements make it a favorite among experienced aquarists. In the wild, this species feeds heavily on sponges and marine invertebrates, so a varied diet containing sponge-based foods, algae, and high-quality frozen preparations is essential for long-term success. While hardy once established, the Queen Angelfish may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, making it best suited for fish-only or carefully planned reef environments.
